The Soo moves 75M tons of goods and is a national security asset for trade and transport for the whole country. It’s an incredible project to see up close. Now we need to push through the final funding to complete the project without delay.
Soo Locks! Today, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers gave me a first hand look at the $3.2 billion project of rebuilding a new lock, set to be complete in 2030.
Some of the proposed cuts, like the closing of Michigan’s only Bureau of Indian Affairs office, aren’t just optional programs — they’re treaty obligations, and part of long-held commitments between the federal government and Michigan’s native communities.
Events in DC are having serious consequences for Michigan’s tribal nations, from budget cuts to changes to social programs.
One of the highlights of visiting the Soo, was getting some time with Chairman Austin Lowes of the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians and President Whitney Gravelle of the Bay Mills Indian Community.
The men and women who serve here come from all across the country, but I was impressed by how many are recruited from the local community.
Yesterday, I met with CBP and ICE Homeland Security Investigations officials at the Sault Ste. Marie Port of Entry.
This small but mighty port does everything from processing thousands of crossings to port of entry services for Great Lakes cruise ships & international flights into Chippewa County.
In the Soo, conversations centered on health care & our deep ties with Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, who have been sister cities since 1668.

Now, with a fighter mission secured at Selfridge, Michigan needs to focus on attracting new military missions, new tech and new jobs that positions our state and our military to win the fight of the future.
To compete with China, we must shorten the time it takes for new ideas to hand new capabilities to the war fighter. That means bringing new tools into manufacturing faster.
President Trump’s signature bill will have real impacts for Michigan. All to pay for tax cuts for some of the wealthiest in the country, 300,000 Michiganders could lose their health care.
