Bernard Sanders

Bernard "Bernie" Sanders is an American politician and activist serving as the senior United States senator from Vermont, a seat he has held since 2007. He is the longest-serving independent in U.S. congressional history, but maintains a close relationship with the Democratic Party, having caucused with House and Senate Democrats for most of his congressional career and sought the party's presidential nomination in 2016 and 2020. Sanders has been viewed as one of the main leaders of the modern American progressive movement.

Let’s be clear. Trump's arrest of Judge Dugan in Milwaukee has nothing to do with immigration. This latest attack is about one thing: unchecked power. It is time for my colleagues in the Republican Party to stand up to his growing authoritarianism.
Our health care system is broken. We need to end the disgrace of being the only major country not to guarantee health care for all as a human right. We must pass Medicare for All — legislation that I will be introducing next week.
Today in America, the rich are getting richer & working families are struggling. What is Mr. Trump doing about this? He's getting ready to give tax cuts to billionaires while making it harder for Americans to access the Medicare, Social Security & veterans benefits they earned.
Trump’s efforts to deport migrant farm workers will only disrupt families, raise food prices and put more pressure on struggling family farms. It is exactly the wrong approach. The time is long overdue for real immigration reform and a path to citizenship for migrant workers.
Pope Francis: “As long as the problems of the poor are not radically resolved by rejecting the absolute autonomy of markets & financial speculation and by attacking the structural causes of inequality, no solution will be found for the world’s problems or to any problems.”
Just months after he became the head of the Catholic Church in 2013, Pope Francis condemned the “new tyranny” of unfettered capitalism and the “idolatry of money.”
Workers are not asking to get rich. They just want to afford three meals a day. In the richest country in the history of the world, no one should work for starvation wages. It is time to raise the disgraceful $7.25/hr federal minimum wage to a living wage of AT LEAST $17/hr.
It's been 51 days since ANY humanitarian aid has entered Gaza. Israeli Minister of Defense Katz has said: "Israel’s policy is clear: no humanitarian aid will enter Gaza."   This is a war crime.   We must end our complicity. NO more military aid for Netanyahu's war machine.
In a competitive global economy, we need the best educated workforce in the world - doctors, nurses, dentists, plumbers, welders, electricians, etc. Young people should not have to go deeply into debt to get the education they and our nation need. We must make public colleges tuition free.
Let me thank my Senate colleague @vanhollen.senate.gov for his trip to visit Kilmar Abrego Garcia. Mr. Abrego Garcia was wrongfully imprisoned. As the Supreme Court indicated, there was no basis for his warrantless arrest. The Trump admin must obey the law. He must be returned home.
No, Mr. Trump. We won't allow you to pay for tax breaks to billionaires by eliminating Head Start which provides early education to over 800,000 children and LIHEAP that keeps seniors and families warm in the winter. Your budget proposal is morally obscene. It must be defeated.
SCOOP: Internal budget doc reveals extent of Trump’s proposed health cuts. About 1/3 of HHS discretionary budget. Our story w @carolynyjohnson.bsky.social @rachelroubein.bsky.social @joelachenbach.bsky.social @laurenweberhp.bsky.social www.washingtonpost.com/health/2025/...
Trump, the so-called dealmaker, now wants to delay Medicare from negotiating drug prices. Eli Lilly charges Americans $1,080 for the diabetes drug Mounjaro when the same drug can be purchased for $200 in Japan and $520 in the U.K. Is this what Trump means by America First?
If you paid $1 In federal income taxes, you paid more than: Tesla in 2024 & 2022 AT&T in 2021 Nike in 2020 FedEx in 2020 Dish Network in 2020 Amazon in 2017-2018 Elon Musk in 2018 Jeff Bezos in 2007 & 2011 Carl Icahn in 2016-2017 Yes. It’s time to tax the rich.
In defiance of the Supreme Court & without any evidence, the White House claims that Kilmar Abrego Garcia is a “terrorist,” who was “sent to the right place.” This is a blatant LIE. He is innocent. He cannot be allowed to rot in an El Salvadorian jail. He must be brought home.
Mohsen Mahdawi of White River Junction, Vermont was illegally detained by ICE during what was supposed to be the final step in his citizenship process. Mr. Mahdawi, a legal resident of the US, must be afforded due process under the law and immediately released from detention.
The U.S. is the only major country on Earth that does not guarantee workers a paid vacation. When a husband, wife & kids are unable to spend any time together on vacation, that is not a family value. It's an attack on everything a family is supposed to stand for. Unacceptable.
While Cummins made $13 billion in profits over three years, they refuse to provide fair wages and job security to the workers of UAW 291 in Oshkosh, WI. This is corporate greed at its worst. Cummings: sit down and negotiate a fair contract with the union.
Trump’s trade chaos is undermining our economy and hurting American families. If Republicans have their way on tariffs and their huge tax bill, most Americans will see their taxes go up, while those on top get a big break. We need a trade policy that puts working people first.
In America last year, nearly 40 million workers made less than $17 an hour. Unacceptable. Nobody in America can make it on $7.25 an hour, $9 an hour or $12 an hour. We need an economy in which all of our workers earn a living wage.
