Karen was a progressive champion, and hugely influential in my political life as a friend and mentor. May her memory be an inspiration to us all as we keep up the fight.
Raised on a farm in southwestern Minnesota, Karen championed local food systems. As a nurse, she was an indomitable advocate for health care for all and immigrant rights.
Karen was the longest serving openly lesbian legislator in the United States. Her time in the Minnesota House spanned nearly forty years from 1980-2019. She played an instrumental role in Minnesota’s transformational law to legalize gay marriage.
I’m so sad to hear that today, on the last day of Pride Month, we have lost a long time Minnesota state legislator and a fierce fighter for justice and freedom for all people: Karen Clark.
The promise and privilege of citizenship extends to every child born in our jurisdiction, and those children deserve just as much of a shot at the American dream as those whose families have been here for generations. No xenophobic Executive Order can undo that.
