Since Donald Trump took office, electricity prices have gone up by 11%.

On the flip side, protecting that $700B/yr subsidy gives fossil fuel a massive incentive to engage in climate denial fraud and dark money political corruption, both of which they do at industrial scale.
If we don’t solve the massive “free-to-pollute” fossil fuel subsidy (IMF: $700B/yr in U.S.), there’s no pathway to climate safety. Period. Once you put a price (penalty) on pollution, that is when innovation happens, because it has a revenue proposition.
Gates has supplied climate deniers with cover for years (presumably unintentionally). His schtick that innovation will solve climate gave them an excuse for inaction, and is just plain wrong.

I know of no scenario that gets us to climate safety without a price on emissions. The free-to-pollute business model is now lethal.
He meets with Republican senators and tells them “innovation” will solve climate, and they come and say, “see, no problem, Gates says innovation will handle it.”
Want innovation? Put a price on carbon emissions. A $200/ton price on carbon emissions is a $199/ton incentive for innovation.
Gates has been harmful on climate for a long time. He has never understood the corruption and negative externality problems.

Here are my three truths about climate:
1. We fail if we don’t end free-to-pollute fossil fuel model. Period. Game over.
2. A crash looms, prefigured by collapse in home insurance/mortgage markets.
3. There are true villains in the story, and we have to tell it that way.

That is the motive — moving ratepayer dollars by the billion to fossil fuel pockets, paying off the fossil fuel barons who spent so much money getting Trump elected. They hope you’ll blame your local utility, and not notice their scam. Wake up to it.
With cheaper solar and wind abundant, some of those expensive units would not be called up at all, and wouldn’t make money. So when Trump operatives put government’s heel on renewables, they deliberately drive up consumer prices.
When solar and wind are backed out of the grid, or their entry on the grid is delayed, the demand they would have met is made up by the grid going “up the stack” to more and more expensive fossil fuel units.
