Our democracy depends on fair representation in Congress. The Voting Rights Act gave power to communities, like Black and Latino voters, who were historically disenfranchised. Today, the Supreme Court further eroded this landmark legislation in striking down Section 2 of the law.
Nexoli has a work permit and was trying to do everything the right way. ICE must release her and stop its case to deport Wilfredo immediately. He should be treated like a kid—not a criminal.
Wilfredo is 10 years old. Last week, he represented himself in immigration court. His mother, Nexoli, was detained in Houston and has been locked up and away from her son since December. Now, DHS wants to send him to Ecuador—a place he has never been and knows no one.
A federal court just ruled this practice unconstitutional. ICE can’t keep breaking apart families and traumatizing our neighbors.

UPDATE: The plane transporting the El Gamal family has been turned around and is heading back to Denver. They deserve fair treatment under the law.
ICE has since detained the family again and is now in the process of deporting them from the US. They are on a plane to Detroit before final departure right now. A federal judge just signed an emergency order to block their deportation. The Trump Admin must follow the law and the court order.
The El Gamal family was locked away for nearly a year at the Dilley trailer prison. Thanks to everyone who spoke out against their imprisonment, including of the five year old twins, ICE released the family on Thursday.
