Richard J. Durbin

Richard Joseph Durbin is an American politician and attorney serving as the senior United States senator from the state of Illinois, a seat he has held since 1997. A member of the Democratic Party, Durbin is in his fifth Senate term and has served since 2005 as the Senate Democratic Whip and since 2025 as the Senate minority whip. He is the longest-serving Democratic whip since the position was established in 1913. Durbin chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee from 2021 to 2025, and led the Ketanji Brown Jackson Supreme Court nomination hearings.

Now I am willing to give the White House and Republicans two weeks to work with Democrats to reform ICE and the campaign of terror we’ve witnessed in Chicago, Minneapolis, and across the country. After two weeks, I make no promises. (2/2)
Following the latest Epstein files release, DOJ is still violating federal law. The Justice Department was supposed to release the full files in December and explain their redactions to Congress by January 3rd.
Key to the Fed’s effectiveness is its credibility and independence. Does Kevin Warsh have the guts to tell Trump his policy choices are wrong for the economy? Whether Warsh values the reputation and independence of our nation’s central bank will determine if he is the right choice for the job.
Americans have lost more than $333 million to crypto ATM scams. I introduced an amendment to a crypto bill that would give law enforcement the tools to go after these scams and their perpetrators, but Senate Republicans just voted it down.
Instead of going after drug smugglers, child predators, and human traffickers, the Trump Administration is wasting valuable resources targeting peaceful protestors in Chicago and Minneapolis. This Administration continues to make Americans less safe.
Today, @duckworth.senate.gov and I met with mayors from across Illinois to discuss federal funding for municipalities. It is always a pleasure to welcome Illinois officials to my office in the Capitol, and today was no exception!
There were already bipartisan negotiations to pass a cryptocurrency bill that would have provided more meaningful guardrails on the industry, but Republicans threw it out. Why? So President Trump and his crypto allies can profit off their own personal cryptocurrencies.
The American people know what they saw in Minneapolis. ICE and DHS are terrorizing communities, ripping apart families, and killing Americans. We must rewrite the DHS bill to address these well-documented abuses. Anything less is a non-starter.
Democrats are ready to avoid a shutdown, but the DHS bill needs serious work. I’m glad that the White House is working with Leader Schumer to avoid a partial government shutdown and rein in ICE’s campaign of terror. Americans are demanding change to ICE’s conduct—we must deliver for them.
J.D. Vance should focus on repairing the chaos his President has created, not on a Senator who has earned the respect of the Senate for her courage and effectiveness. (3/3)
