Today I sent a letter w/ @repmarktakano.bsky.social to Sec. Rubio condemning Hungary's recent passage of anti-LGBTQ legislation that undermines free expression & rule of law in Hungary. Secretary Rubio must speak out against these harmful acts which run counter to the US-Hungary relationship.
Congratulations to Prime Minister Mark Carney on his victory in the Canadian elections yesterday. Canada is among the closest of US allies and a critical economic partner to our Commonwealth. I look forward to continuing to work with my Canadian counterparts on the issues facing our two nations.
Without Congressional consultation, Trump and DOGE have illegally sought to shut down MCC without evidence of wrongdoing making America less safe, less secure, and less prosperous. I urge my GOP colleagues to stand up to this reckless attack on our credibility.
In 2022, I hosted then MCC CEO Alice Albright & the Kosovar PM and President in signing a compact to expand battery storage and workforce development in Kosovo as well as foster increased investment. Without MCC, America's competitors will seek to invest and replace our presence.
Photo of applause after the singing of the compact.
Since 2004, the Millennium Challenge Corporation has promoted economic growth, reduced poverty, and strengthened democratic institutions in countries which share American values. MCC expands markets, incentivizes reforms, and expands US engagement with partners around the world.
Sadly, the axe that shattered Francisco and Marilu Méndez's car window in New Bedford is another tangible example of the Trump administration's cruelty-first approach that is focused on tearing apart families and causing fear in the immigrant community.
New Bedford's immigrant community has been a stepping-stone to success for new and first-generation Americans for hundreds of years. Simply stated, New Bedford - and our region as a whole - is stronger because of the generations of immigrants who built this gateway city and remain there today.
There is no excuse for how the Méndez family is being treated - they deserve answers, they deserve to be reunited, and they certainly should not live under the threat of their husband and father facing deportation to a country that the US has already recognized as unsafe for them to return to.
I voted against the so called "SAVE" Act today. American elections are already secure, and the SAVE Act introduces unnecessary voter restrictions for millions of eligible citizens by claiming they are a “solution” to a made-up problem.
The Republican SAVE Act would make it more difficult for over 1.4 million Massachusetts women to register to vote or cast a ballot.
Trump is out-and-out lying to the American people that other countries may not come back with retaliatory tariffs! There is no bet here. In my time representing our country on foreign affairs issues and, as recently as conversations with officials yesterday, the blowback is coming, and soon.
Let us pledge today to recommit ourselves to ensuring that every person feels safe, respected, and free to be their authentic self. In a world that too often tests our compassion, choose to be an ally. It is the measure of our humanity and our decency. 🏳️‍⚧️
As a former District Attorney, I am deeply interested in an explanation, too, on why she was arrested in the manner she was by masked, plain clothed officers, why she was transported so quickly to Louisiana, and how quickly she was given access to an attorney. 4/5
I requested explanations from Secretary Noem about why Ozturk was arrested, why and how her visa was revoked, what policies are in place to revoke visas overall, and what polices have been put in place specifically for students. 3/5
I contacted the Department of Homeland Security to make clear that the Trump Administration should not be detaining and deporting legal residents like Rumeysa Ozturk just because they hold an opposing political view. 1/5
