Today’s vote wasn’t about keeping government open. It was about Congressional Republicans handing over their power - the power of the purse - to the President.
There is no separation of powers so long as Congressional Republicans continue to show unfettered fealty to Trump.
I voted NO.
More than 50% of preschool aged kids aren't in school, but 97% of them have access to PBS's "Ready to Learn" content which helps improve literacy and math skills. I encourage you to read GBH CEO Susan Goldberg's message on the importance of CPB funding here: loom.ly/MXMuFGI
Today is Protect Public Media Day - as a strong supporter of PBS, I met with GBH CEO Susan Goldberg and New England Media CEO Matt Abramovitz last week in DC to discuss the critical role that public broadcasting stations and the CPB play in providing educational content to families across the US.
I also asked head of USAID Pete Marocco what legal authority allows him to withhold congressionally appropriated funds from Ukraine.
He said he didn't understand the question.
Today at a Foreign Affairs Committee briefing on USAID I asked Trump's head of USAID Pete Marocco, as the overseer of democracy and free elections programming globally, whether he was at the Capitol on January 6th.
He refused to say no.
I wanted to check in briefly before tonight's joint session of Congress:
Illegally withholding Congressionally appropriated aid to Ukraine is a gift to Putin. It undermines our allies and enables leaders like Xi in China. Simply put, it is wrong.
GOP members must join in condemning this appeasement of Putin and abandonment of our allies.
Their silence is complicity.
Thanks to Rev. Nell Fields for organizing a rally in support of Ukraine in Falmouth today. Hundreds lined the streets in support, and I shared my message in support of Ukraine, our allies, and our American values.
When I visited with Ukrainian border guards on my way to meet with President Zelenskyy last spring I was asked to leave a note for Ukrainian soldiers.
My message is as true today as it was last April: Ukraine is on the front line of freedom - not just for Ukraine, but for the entire free world.
If J.D. Vance had ever taken the time to visit Ukraine, he'd know the very first thing President Zelenskyy says when you arrive is THANK YOU.
Here we are last spring celebrating the broad, bipartisan support that existed for Ukraine in Congress when 73% voted in favor of standing with our ally.
When tuna fishermen reached out to me because a Trump executive order was allowing overfishing & hurting their small businesses, I took action and demanded answers. Tonight, I received notification from NOAA that the overfishing will stop at 11:30PM. More info: keating.house.gov/0228bluefin
This is a time for all Members of Congress to speak up - particularly my Republican colleagues. We represent the United States of America, too, and today's meeting was the most counterproductive diplomatic exchange in our history.
POTUS/VP's attack on President Zelenskyy just now was the most embarrassing diplomatic exchange in our nation's history. The impacts of this despicable exchange—in Ukraine where people are dying and in our allied capitols whose trust in our country has diminished—will be far reaching and destructive
To our allies in Ukraine on today’s agreement: There is a difference between exploiting a relationship & building a relationship. While I fear Donald Trump may not know the difference, be assured many of us representing our country do.
70%+ of flu fatalities are over 65, & nearly 1/3 of our 9th District neighbors are 65+.
Am I surprised that the FDA cancelled a meeting with experts to choose next year's flu vaccine? No. Angry? Hell yes.
GOP Senators who confirmed RFK Jr. based on vaccine assurances sure have a lot to answer for.
Important meetings yesterday w/ EU High Rep Kaja Kallas & European Parliament President Roberta Metsola to discuss how Trump’s tariffs will raise costs on Americans & impact local industries. The EU is our ally & I will continue to work w/ US & global partners to support local businesses in MA09
Today I spoke with Canadian Consul General to New England Bernadette Jordan about the importance of the U.S.-Canada friendship. Canada supplies 80% of the gas and diesel used in New England. The President's short-sighted tariffs will raise the cost of gas for Bay Staters.
TPS & DED recipients are business owners, essential workers, and neighbors who have built their lives in our communities. I'm proud to co-sponsor the American Dream and Promise Act and I'm ready to fight for these hardworking individuals who contribute so much to SE Mass and our nation. #HomeIsHere
And the Republicans in Congress are blind sheep without any thought for the country or even their own constituents - I'm voting NO.
Trump and Musk’s agenda was never to cut waste and it was never to make America great again. They were always about cutting vital services for the majority of American families so they could put more in their and their friend’s pockets.
