There's a longstanding law that requires hospitals to provide care to *anyone* who shows up in the E.R. You know who signed it? Ronald Reagan. It has nothing to do with Medicare or Medicaid. It has everything to do with not letting people die while trying to prove their citizenship. (4/6)
Undocumented immigrants cannot access federal health care programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and the ACA. It's illegal. Period. In fact, Republicans are the ones trying to strip health care away from *documented* immigrants—those who are here legally and are playing by the rules. (3/6)
Graphic reading "FACT: Undocumented individuals cannot purchase coverage through the Affordable Care Act or receive comprehensive Medicare or Medicaid Coverage. NO ONE IS PROPOSING TO CHANGE THAT."
Here’s what Democrats actually want: 1. Extend the ACA premium tax credits. This would provide *enormous* relief to families across the country (including thousands in Maine). 2. Undo the reckless cuts to Medicaid included in the Big Ugly Bill—so 15 million people don’t lose their coverage. (2/6)
🧵 I’ve watched Republicans peddle some serious bullshit over the years. But saying that Democrats shut down the government just so they can give health care to "illegal aliens" has to be one of the most baseless and deceptive ploys I’ve ever seen. (1/6)
Couldn’t be happier to be home in Maine this weekend. On Monday, we SHOULD be in Washington—but Speaker Johnson is keeping the House locked. Why? Likely to avoid swearing in Rep. Grijalva, the 218th signer forcing a vote on the Epstein Files. We owe this to the victims. Disgraceful.
It's official: Speaker Johnson will not bring the House back into session next week. Mr. Speaker: Do your job! Come to the table. Help Democrats reopen the government and protect health care. Swear in Rep. Grijalva. RELEASE THE EPSTEIN FILES.
We just sent $20 BILLION to Argentina to help bail out its economy. How did they return the favor? By making *its* soybean exports more attractive to China—at the expense of American farmers. Trump cares more about bailing out a failed foreign president than helping our farmers. Let that sink in.
Their terrible CR will only make things worse, forcing millions off their health care and leading to needless suffering in communities across the country. @housedemocrats.bsky.social are fighting to lower your health care costs and ensure the wealthy pay their fair share.
When we’re talking about multi-trillion-dollar spending packages, $2 million might not seem like a lot. But for small providers like MFP (and the patients who rely on them), that funding is critical—even lifesaving. This is the kind of damage Republican policies are causing.
Because of the Big Ugly Bill, which banned health providers that offer abortions from being reimbursed by Medicaid, Maine Family Planning will have to shut down its primary care practice at the end of the month—forcing 800 patients to find new doctors.
Today, I joined Briana and Toby McGrath, Maine State Director for @protectourcare.org, to sound the alarm about how Republicans’ failure to protect affordable health care will make life *so* much harder for Mainers like Briana.
ACA premium tax credits made it possible for people like Briana Bononcini to own her own business (the wonderful Hunt & Alpine in Portland). But with these tax credits set to expire at the end of the year, thousands of Mainers—including Briana—are about to see their monthly premiums skyrocket.
On Yom Kippur, many share the greeting "G’mar chatima tova"—a wish to be inscribed in the Book of Life for good. It’s a hopeful blessing, conveying resilience + renewal even in uncertain times. G’mar chatima tova to all who celebrate. Wishing you a meaningful fast and a year of peace and renewal.
@democrats-appropriations.house.gov have spent the past 9 months trying to work on bipartisan funding bills. And the sad part is, I *know* many of my Republican colleagues share our concerns about protecting affordable health care.
Day 1 of the Republican Shutdown. I'll be joining @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social's 24-hour livestream at 8 am to talk through how we got here, what this means for Mainers, and why Republicans must get back to work so we can get the government back open and save America’s health care. TUNE IN 👇
