I also want to take a moment to commend NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, who gave his life to prevent more victims. A father, an immigrant, and an American, Didarul displayed true heroism. May he and the other victims rest in peace.
The shooter used an MR assault rifle — a military-grade firearm — and had multiple mental health crisis holds placed on him. Congress must ban these weapons of war from our communities and enact red-flag laws to stop all guns from getting to those in crisis.
I want to take a moment to express my deepest sympathies to all New Yorkers today, particularly to the victims and their families of yesterday’s Midtown Manhattan shooting.
