This week, the US House Appropriations Committee debated the final of its 12 annual funding bills. While there was a lot of good in the FY27 Defense funding bill, its lopsided price tag comes at the cost of healthcare, nutrition, housing, and other investments in hardworking Americans here at home.
However, I am hopeful that as the House and Senate continue to negotiate a final version of the bill, we can craft a better bill that ensures we do right by our servicemembers and military families as well as have the best fighting force defending our country.
Congress has a responsibility to understand these decisions to maintain confidence in the integrity of the process. Unfortunately, the amendment was not approved and taken together with my other concerns, I could not support this bill as it is currently written.
During the debate, I supported an amendment that would require the Defense Department to explain the removal of promoted officers. Our military depends on a promotion system that rewards merit, experience, leadership, and performance.
The bill also did not address concerns about Administration’s lack of transparency and accountability to taxpayers.
As Congress tackles AI policy, I will continue to listen to my constituents and bring their perspectives to the debate and acknowledge how intricately AI affects our lives every day, from work and art to personal privacy and national security.
This week, I met with members of the Georgia State Council of Machinists. We discussed artificial intelligence (AI) and its possible effect on our workforce.
I have also supported efforts to expand fair market access for American dairy products at home and abroad.
Supporting dairy means supporting farm families, local jobs, school nutrition, rural communities, and Georgia’s agricultural economy.
I represent one of the top milk-producing districts in the nation and have worked to support dairy farmers, protect dairy benefits in WIC, expand milk options in schools, invest in programs that help dairy businesses grow, and provide relief to producers facing higher costs and market disruptions.
June is #NationalDairyMonth – a time to thank the farmers, workers, haulers, veterinarians, processors, small businesses, and rural communities who keep milk, cheese, ice cream, and other dairy products on our tables and help keep Georgia agriculture strong.

While I supported an effort to restore their funding, along with other amendments, we could not improve the bill. As we continue to work on the bill, I hope for a bipartisan pathway forward that protects our country and its people, including the most fundamental rights enshrined in our Constitution.
But this bill guts the department's Offices of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Office and the Inspector General which helps prevent fraud, waste, and abuse - something Democrats and Republicans want!
Unfortunately, this bill does not include commonsense guardrails, that most Americans want, to ensure that peoples' civil liberties are protected.
Yesterday, the House Appropriations Committee debated the Fiscal Year 2027 bill that funds the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security.
Because we could not improve the bill on this and other fronts during the debate, I had to vote against it. I am hopeful that as the appropriations process continues, we build a better bill that meets the needs of Georgia and hardworking Americans across our country.
As co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional Job Corps Caucus that I lead with Rep. Guthrie, a Republican from KY, I spoke in favor of an amendment, offered by a Republican colleague of mine from Montana & I know a majority of the committee would have supported the amendment but it was withdrawn.
