Although college enrollment numbers across the country are down, HBCU applications are up almost 30%, a testament to their excellence.
Georgia's Second Congressional District is home to two amazing HBCUs, Fort Valley State University and Albany State University. I know both the unique challenges these institutions face and the incredible opportunities they provide for their students.
I, myself, am a Morehouse graduate, and know firsthand the important role our HBCUs play in educating, training, and empowering the next generation of America’s leaders.
Last week, I had the opportunity to attend events and meetings alongside leaders and students in support of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
Instead, House Republican leaders, have said the House cannot vote on a bipartisan bill and instead insist on sending yet another bill to the Senate that cannot pass.

This morning, Senate Democrats and Republicans negotiated a solution to fund Homeland Security which passed by unanimous consent. Even President Trump was signaling that he was supportive of the bill. We could have ended the shutdown today!
As a powerful figure for progress, Lillian inspired a president and continues to be an inspiration to generations that have followed. From Plains, Georgia, to Godrej, India, her compassion touched the lives of many.
Much like her son, Lillian continued to serve the public long after her retirement. After completing her career as a nurse at age 68, Lillian joined the Peace Corps, where she worked in a clinic in India.
She played an active role in her son Jimmy's senate, governor, and presidential campaigns, where she gained nationwide recognition for her earnestness and Southern charm.
"Miss Lillian", as she was known, served in her local hospital, challenged the bigoted color barriers of the time, and raised four children with her husband James Earl Carter.
During Women's History Month, I would like to recognize a leader and humanitarian from Southwest Georgia, Lillian Gordy Carter.
Born in Richland, Georgia, in 1898, she quickly gained recognition in her community for her diligent work as a nurse.

I will continue to work in Congress to ensure that legislation reflects the understanding that military quality of life is not secondary to readiness, it is readiness.
Military families have seen programs gutted or eliminated that engage and include their diverse community, and they have lost access to the full range of healthcare they previously had.
Families of servicemembers are greatly affected by the decisions we make in Congress. Our servicemembers and their families are on the frontlines of the Iran war and are coping with fuel and other household expenses that have skyrocketed here at home in the past weeks.
Yesterday, I participated in the U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs hearing with military leaders on issues involving military families’ quality of life.

I will continue to work across the aisle with folks like Congressman Austin Scott to tackle challenges our hardworking farmers face when it comes to agriculture and trade.
... and the skyrocketing costs of inputs – like fertilizer and other components – that our farmers need to grow what we eat. All of this has made farming more expensive for Georgians and increased the cost to put food on the table for American families.
