A moratorium on state AI laws already failed twice with opposition in both chambers of Congress. Now, Trump is bypassing Congress to create a lawless Wild West for AI companies.
It’s a bad idea - and I'm actively exploring legislative options in response to this order.

Vile, disturbing new photos of Donald Trump that raise even more question about knowledge of abuses at Epstein's estate.
@oversightdemocrats.house.gov are demanding the DOJ comply with our subpoena and release the full Epstein files. Stop protecting pedophiles. Survivors deserve justice now.

Extending ACA tax credits isn’t optional. It’s essential to preventing millions of Americans from being priced out of health care coverage and medical services they rely on.

Yesterday, I voted YES on legislation that would repeal President Trump’s attacks on labor protections for more than a million federal workers.
I'm grateful to the 20 Republicans who joined us to pass this bill, and I urge my colleagues in the Senate to support it.
Republicans think there should be no limits on dumping, including forever chemicals, because their donors’ interests are more important than the American public’s health and well-being.

Hostility on Capitol Hill to this damaging and irresponsible policy remains strong, and I am actively exploring legislative options with members in both chambers and both parties in response to this order.

The first attempt to pass this harmful AI moratorium policy in the One Big Beautiful Bill failed because of robust bipartisan opposition. Trump is using this executive order to bypass this opposition in both chambers of Congress.
Moreover, his attempt to block state laws through federal coercion likely violates the 10th Amendment, and as such constitutes an unconstitutional abuse of power.
A moratorium on state legislation will reduce the likelihood of Congressional action as well, which is the unstated goal of this Executive Order.
Congress has been slow to respond to the AI revolution and in the absence of a strong federal response, states are taking the lead to create guardrails and protect the public.
Trump’s attempt to undo this progress without providing any federal regulatory protections would be extremely harmful.
President Trump’s AI order is an attempt to kill responsible safety reforms passed by states, which would create a lawless Wild West environment for AI companies that puts Americans at risk. This is a terrible idea.
My statement:
I support a ban on Members of Congress trading stocks, and just signed the discharge petition to force a vote.
Trump calling affordability a 'hoax' won’t change that grocery, energy, housing, and health care costs continue to burden Americans.
There's still time to negotiate a plan to extend ACA tax credits and stop health care costs from skyrocketing. Republicans should get it done.
Wonderful joining the bright young leaders at BASIS Independent McLean to discuss our work in Congress and how we can rise above polarization to get things done for the American people.
The Trump Administration is doubling down on making life more expensive for the American people.
To add to the growing list of ways they’re squeezing Americans, they’re trying to kill the most affordable repayment option for student loan borrowers.
Statement from Members of Virginia's Congressional Delegation on NDAA rotary wing aircraft provision – with @repsuhas.bsky.social @repwalkinshaw.bsky.social @bobbyscott.house.gov @mcclellan.house.gov @repvindman.bsky.social:

Republicans have no idea what to do. They've been promising a health care plan for 16 years and never offered one.
They could pass everything on this list and it wouldn't stop catastrophic health care cost increases for the American people.

Today, Rep. Don Beyer, Sen. Peter Welch and I are introducing a bill to expand ranked choice voting to all elections for Congress. RCV assures that winners have majority support, no candidate acts as a “spoiler,” and the voting process favors positive coalition-building.
There are communist countries and dictatorships that don't treat Americans this way.
Trump is doing it to citizens of our close allies.
A lot of tourists understandably won't trust Trump's thought police with that information.
They'll stay away, and our economy will suffer.
