President Trump is spending billions of taxpayer dollars on his irresponsible, deadly war with Iran – all while he slashes healthcare and nutrition assistance for Americans.
This is one of the many reasons I voted to stop Trump from continuing this conflict.
As the representative for one of America’s top ag research institutions – the University of Illinois – I know how important global collaboration is to make scientific breakthroughs that support our farmers, fight hunger, and save lives. We can’t let the U.S. retreat from these vital partnerships.
That is upside down. I will continue fighting for a solution that keeps our communities safe and ensures accountability, while guaranteeing public servants are paid for the vital work they do.
Let me be clear: I am ready and willing to fund TSA, FEMA, and anti-terrorism efforts to ensure hardworking public servants get their paychecks and Americans are protected from real threats. But Republicans would rather these folks go without pay than demand reform & accountability for ICE and CBP.
Just this week, ICE agents detained four workers in Bethalto in my district. When this administration said they were going after criminals, they lied. These actions, on top of the horrors we’ve witnessed over the last year, are why I cannot and have not supported additional funding for ICE.
We need a serious push for diplomacy and a clear plan to prevent this from spiraling further. Our troops’ safety and stability in the region depend on it.
President Trump promised to end “forever wars” and lower costs on day one. Instead, six servicemembers have been killed, gas prices are up, and Republicans are more concerned with entangling us in unauthorized foreign wars than making everyday life easier for Americans.
But just months ago, the administration said Iran’s nuclear capabilities had been neutralized. Now we’re being told new strikes were necessary. Those two things don’t add up, and the American people deserve straight answers.
I’ve always taken seriously the threat Iran poses to our security and that of our allies. That concern remains today. We cannot allow Iran to become a nuclear power, for the long-term security of the United States and our allies.
That’s why I voted to reassert Congress’s authority and make it clear — no more military action in Iran.
This week, I received a classified briefing on the recent strikes in Iran. It did not give me confidence that this administration has a clear justification for putting the lives of men and women in uniform at risk.
I will continue to call for accountability at every level and stand up for the safety of our immigrant communities in Central and Southern Illinois.
I was one of the first members of Congress to sign onto articles of impeachment against Kristi Noem. While I am glad she has been fired, that does not change the fact that we must see a complete overhaul of DHS to ensure the agency ends its cruel and dangerous enforcement tactics.
Enough with the fear mongering. If farmers want to use solar and save on their energy bills, they should have that option. That's why I introduced a Farm Bill amendment to stop Republicans from banning USDA money from being used for solar projects.

What happened in Bethalto appears to be yet another instance of ICE entering our communities and going after folks either on their way to work, dropping off their kids, or at times, literally on the job. It's unacceptable.
