Best to all for a safe and joyful Independence Day.
As we celebrate our democracy and freedom, let’s continue to push back on those determined to achieve one-man rule with no meaningful checks and balances and who disregard the very values upon which our nation was founded.

On CBS Austin, I warned that already struggling Americans will be hard hit by the Big Ugly Bill, losing access to a doctor and food assistance.
Too afraid to cross Trump, Republican colleagues bowed to him instead of standing up for working families.
So many Republican colleagues seem to believe that their most important role is clicking their heels and saluting Trump. With the rare exception of Republican Senator Tillis, who recognized that "this bill will betray the promise Donald Trump made," they fell in line like automatons.
My statement:
At 3:35 in the morning, I spoke on the House floor against the Big Ugly Bill, which will deny 17 million Americans health care, raise electricity costs by 17%, and steal food from hungry families.
All to award more tax breaks to billionaires.
As TX schools face closures due to Gov. Abbott's underfunding of public education, Trump illegally withholds $660M in congressionally approved funds from our classrooms, threatening summer and after-school programs.
Even more GOP betrayal on top of pushing voucher schemes in their Big Ugly Bill.
Republicans yielding to Trump's Big Ugly Bill rather than defending their neighbors' access to health care, food assistance, and more must be held accountable.
A vote for it raises costs on families and risks a financial crisis by adding trillions to our debt. All for more billionaire tax breaks.
Texas has remained the state with the most uninsured citizens. But it can get much worse.
The Joint Economic Committee reported that if Trump’s “one big beautiful bill” is approved, another 1,671,965 Texans will likely lose access to a family physician and essential medications.
If you are up bright and early tomorrow morning, I will be joining CNN shortly after 7 AM CST to discuss some of the more ugly elements of what Trump is trying to muscle through in the very misnamed “one big beautiful bill.“
Today is a day of two Trump/GOP tragedies – the Senate-passed big ugly bill and the closure of USAID.
17 million Americans will lose access to a family physician under the bill, and 14 million people are estimated to die globally without USAID.
Senate approval only with VP Vance’s tie breaking vote. Now we make one final House effort to protect our neighbors from this ugly bill. (2/2)
Much of Trump’s most outrageous actions at home and abroad offer distraction from the main event: Taking from those with less to give to those with the most. More billionaire tax breaks while 17 million Americans lose access to a family physician and our national debt is spiked by trillions. (1/2)
Where lies are king, truth is the enemy. House Republicans narrowly passed a bill to defund public broadcasting, because a country of engaged and informed citizens creates problems for Trump on his path to tyranny.
Important read from a leading legislative creator of the Medicare Advantage program describing the many disadvantages and waste that have come from this program.
Trump and Congress need to stand up to the insurance lobby to stop the waste and abuse in Medicare DisAdvantage.
Sometimes even Elon Musk is right. The “big beautiful” bill represents shameless expansion of the debt by those who are at the same time denying health care access to 17 million Americans.
Pleased to meet w/Dr. Debra Patt, an experienced Austin oncologist and able advocate for her patients Robert, Robin, and Richard. Discussed the challenges many Americans face in affording their meds and seeking insurance approvals. Substantial reforms are urgently needed.
Speaker Johnson appears determined to prevent our house resolution from even securing a vote.
Even on the question of entering a war, Republicans always yield to Trump. (2/2)
Thanks to Senator Tim Kane for his leadership in securing a vote on our efforts to restrain Trump’s unconstitutional Iranian attack.
All Democrats except Fetterman voted for the resolution; all Republicans except Paul voted against it. (1/2)
This also honors the dedicated team in both my Austin and DC offices. We are committed to responding to individual concerns and determined to push back on Trump, and working together with neighbors, to eventually achieve the progress we need. (2/2)
So much is going on in the world and here in our country, but I take this moment to express my appreciation to the many Austin Chronicle readers who voted to honor me with the Best of Austin award for the 16th year. (1/2)
In the Budget Committee, I affirmed the failure of Musk/Trump DOGE, yet the continuing need to eliminate governmental waste and inefficiency by taking on some of the special interests who are responsible for it.
