They've very aware of that! As am I, and I do think it's the biggest reason why I'm deeply uncomfortable with the dominant take on here that it's completely insane to even consider this question. It's not only a plausible mid-term problem, it's also a _really important one_
Right. Personally, I think it's pretty clear Claude isn't conscious, somewhat apparent it busts apart a lot of pre-existing notions of consciousness insofar as it presents a good simulation of it, and I'm not willing to take any strong stance on whether a neural network can be conscious in general
Anthropic, more than other labs, very specifically trains Claude to think and act like it considers itself a moral agent. (Compare the Anthropic constitution, which literally says things like the below, with OpenAI's System Cards, which OpenAI say are an equivalent document arxiv.org/pdf/2601.03267)
Claude’s obviously not conscious! It’s a philosophical zombie, which influential schools of thought spent much of the 20th century flatly stating was an impossibility. No uncomfortable questions there 👍
I’ve read his dark materials three times - as a 10 year old, a 15 year old, and a 28 year old. Each time it was a radically different work of genius and I fully expect the fourth time - as a father of two - to hit hard again, in a different way again
Okay, a related question: works that hit one way when you were young, and then very differently when you were older? The standout here for me is the 2007 Pregnancy Movies: Juno and Knocked Up. Can’t think of movies where my feelings towards the characters shifted so much with time
