Mike Levin

Michael Ted Levin is an American politician and attorney who serves as the U.S. representative for California's 49th congressional district since 2019. He is a member of the Democratic Party and represents most of San Diego's North County, as well as part of southern Orange County.

Public media exists to serve the public, not the political whims of whoever holds power. Today’s ruling affirms that principle. Now we need Congress to act on it. I will keep pushing to restore what was taken, because an informed democracy depends on a free and independent press. 
Republicans in Congress separately voted to strip public broadcasting of its funding, and that damage is real. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which has kept local stations on the air for decades, is gone.
A federal judge ruled Trump’s attack on NPR and PBS unconstitutional. The First Amendment is clear: the government can't cut funding to a news organization simply because it dislikes their coverage. That is textbook viewpoint discrimination. The court called it out. But here is the hard truth.

You do not get to start a war alone and then lecture your allies for not showing up. That is the foreign policy of someone who has never been held accountable for anything in his life.
Trump’s message to the UK: “You’ll have to start learning how to fight for yourself. The U.S.A. won’t be there to help you anymore, just like you weren’t there for us. Go get your own oil.”
Dwight Eisenhower, the man who liberated Europe and then watched us prosecute the war criminals we defeated, said it plainly: "We could make no more tragic mistake than merely to concentrate on military strength." He was right.
They protect American credibility, because a nation that lectures the world about human rights while its leaders broadcast potential war crimes on television has nothing left to say.
These standards are written in the blood of wars that went unconstrained. They protect American soldiers as well, because a military that pledges no mercy invites no mercy in return.
What makes the legal exposure harder to dismiss: Trump framed the threat explicitly as "retribution" rather than military necessity or a proportionate military objective. Retribution is not a recognized legal justification under the laws of war.
When Russia targeted Ukraine's power grid, the International Criminal Court opened investigations and issued arrest warrants. Leading international law scholars have all warned that Trump's threatened strikes would likely violate international humanitarian law.
Trump's threat to destroy Iran's civilian power grid sits in deeply troubling legal territory. International humanitarian law prohibits attacking infrastructure whose destruction would cause disproportionate harm to civilians.
The Pentagon's own Law of War Manual states without ambiguity that declaring "no quarter" is a war crime, whether or not it is carried out. Denial of quarter is also a federal crime under the 1996 War Crimes Act.
