Congress has appropriated tens of billions of dollars to FEMA in FY25, yet FEMA still owes billions of obligated dollars to states waiting on disaster relief, including those led by Republican governors. The state of Florida is owed over $2.6 billion.
In a single year, DHS has churned through three FEMA administrators, while FEMA’s backlog of unanswered disaster assistance applications has exploded to the largest in its history. That is not a funding shortfall; it is a blatant failure of leadership.
As the only former Emergency Management Director in Congress, it is my responsibility to sound the alarm that FEMA is being dismantled by DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.
May we carry forward his vision in our actions each day and continue building the future he spoke of all those years ago.
