In 2001, Janice Hayes Williams rode shotgun with her Uncle George to visit the Crownsville Hospital Patient Cemetery for the first time – what she saw devastated her. On the gravestones where there should have been names, dates, or any dedication to someone’s life, there were only numbers.

I’m about to go live on CNN’s State of the Union ➡️ Be sure to tune in during the 9:00 AM hour today on TV or at the link below:
Next stop of the day: the 73rd annual Anne Arundel County Fair! 🎟️ There’s amazing food, a pig race, rodeo, and so many incredible exhibits from local vendors and farmers. Tomorrow is the last day so you don’t want to miss it. Come out and bring out the family.
Hugh’s case is not a one-time occurrence: there are nearly 400 cases of SUDC annually in our country, yet no known cause or form of prevention. We must continue to fight for full funding to lifesaving NIH research so no other family has to experience what the Nie’s endured.
On May 30th, Maryland’s Third District lost one of our youngest members – Hugh Nie – who was just 17 months old. Hugh tragically lost his life to Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood, but his time was filled with joy and loving memories and his impact in our community is still felt.
It has been a difficult 24 hours for the Annapolis community, and I will continue to be in communication as the investigation unfolds.

We have another update from the U.S. Naval Academy: the Midshipman who was injured has been released. I'm grateful to the doctors and nurses at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, and all those involved in ensuring the safety of our Midshipmen as the Naval Academy resumes operations.
I’m still in constant communication with the Superintendent for any further updates and they are launching an investigation so we can ensure every lesson is learned from yesterday’s incident.
A quick update this morning from the U.S. Naval Academy. The Midshipman who was shot in the shoulder last night during the clearing of a building is expected to make a full recovery. Thank you to the first responders, nurses, and doctors for their swift action.
Today, the U.S. Naval Academy went on lockdown after threats against the Academy. There is no active shooter threat, but one Midshipman was injured while Naval Security Forces were clearing a building. Thankfully, they are in stable condition. Please see my full statement below.
Here is what we know: There is currently no active threat at the U.S. Naval Academy.
I am actively working in coordination with the Navy, our first responders, and the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. As we wait for further details, I want to extend my gratitude to our first responders.
My team and I are monitoring the situation at the U.S. Naval Academy. Please follow the guidance of local law enforcement during this lockdown.
These are not just numbers: these are our friends, neighbors, and family members who will lose coverage, which is why the fight for quality, affordable care here and across the country must continue.
Nearly 19,000 people in Maryland’s Third Congressional District and 206,000 Marylanders are projected to lose health care because of President Trump's Big Ugly Law.
Today, we honor not only their sacrifice, but our strength as a nation to come together and adapt in the face of that tragedy. Let us never forget.

Every year, I re-read this Times article, and each time, I am struck by the stories of courageous individuals and first responders who stepped up to defend their neighbors and our nation in one of our most frightening moments.
"On a normal day, we value heroism because it is uncommon. On Sept. 11, we valued heroism because it was everywhere."
I am disappointed this year’s NDAA provided no protections against U.S. troops being used on U.S. civilians and no checks on the President’s powers. See my full statement above.
Today, after careful consideration, I voted against the NDAA. This was not the vote I hoped to take. House Republicans walked away from nine months of bipartisan, good-faith negotiations in committee.
