The cost of raising a child over 18 years is now $300,000 and a huge part of that is the enormous cost of child care. Republicans talk a big game about being pro-family, but *actually* supporting young families means making life more affordable – including child care!
If you paid federal income taxes at all last year, then you paid more than at least 88 of the biggest corporations in America. Over $105 Billion of profits went untaxed, in part thanks to Trump's corporate tax breaks in the Big Ugly Bill. It’s so backwards.
Happy Friday to everyone except Trump and Speaker Johnson, who tried to sneak through a long-term extension of FISA’s Section 702 (a law that’s long been abused to spy on Americans without a warrant) at 2AM last night. Luckily, we blocked it – and we’ll keep fighting for real reform.
The U.S. military reportedly blew up 2 more boats in the Eastern Pacific, killing 5 people – bringing the grand total up to 168 people killed (that we know about). Once again: this is murder. There was no due process. And these strikes aren’t making Americans safer – they’re making us a target.
It’s sad that politics are part of the calculus for my Republican colleagues when we’re talking about an expensive, deadly war that is already spiraling out of control. BUT they still have time to do the right thing and join Democrats to pass our war powers resolution to end this war.
Screenshot of NBC News headline. White text on dark blue background. Headline reads: In group chats and meetings, Republicans are privately petrified the Iran war could cost them the midterms. Subhead: Many Republican lawmakers and strategists told NBC News they worry the party has little to run on. 'Right now, the voters don't see a message or a strategy,' a Trump pollster.
At every turn, Republicans in Congress have abandoned their duty to the Constitution, willingly given up their power as a co-equal branch, and allowed Trump to do whatever he wants – including launching this reckless war with Iran.
Trump is pushing for a “clean” reauthorization of a law – FISA Section 702 – that allows the government to spy on Americans’ communications with people abroad without a warrant. We can’t rubber stamp that. We need real reforms.
Trump’s strategy of suing every news outlet that reports stories he doesn’t like won’t change the fact that he’s in the Epstein Files – over and over and over again. He can’t bury the truth this time.
Tax Day reminder that billionaires are paying EVEN LESS this year, thanks to the huge tax cuts Trump and Republicans in Congress gave them in the Big Ugly Bill, while working Americans got kicked off their health care and are struggling to afford gas and groceries. Tax the rich!
It was so great to stop by the Center’s Trans Day of Empowerment to celebrate Trans Day of Visibility! Especially during difficult times like these, finding and protecting joy in community is so important. 🏳️‍⚧️
I will NOT support a “clean” reauthorization of FISA Section 702 because the status quo is unacceptable – it literally allows the government to violate citizens’ Constitutional right to privacy. We can keep this country safe AND protect your privacy. (3/3)
This backdoor has been open for a decade – but this week, as we debate renewing Section 702 of FISA, we can finally close it. I’m working with a bipartisan group of my colleagues in Congress to amend FISA, close these loopholes, and protect Americans’ privacy. (2/3)
This week, the House will vote on renewal of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act – aka FISA. As it stands, Section 702 enables the government to surveil conversations between US citizens and foreign nationals without a warrant. (1/3)
It's vitally important that we fight all forms of discrimination and ensure every community is able to thrive without fear of prejudice. That's why I was glad to meet with the San Diego chapter of the Arab Anti-discrimination Committee.
