I will continue advocating for life-long educational opportunities that improve literacy rates to empower individuals in Northwest Indiana and across the country to thrive in the workforce and succeed in our economy.

Spoke on the House floor to highlight my meeting with the More Action for Students organization in NWI. It’s clear these young people are not waiting for the future to arrive. They’re shaping it and laboring to build a society that is more just, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of all people.
I look forward to continuing to work with our local stakeholders and my House and Senate colleagues in a bipartisan manner to finalize these vital funding requests as soon as possible.
We must continue to do all we can to ensure that our police officers, firefighters, and emergency response teams have the support and resources they need to perform their duties to the best of their abilities and keep our communities safe.
As a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, and Science, I am grateful for the opportunity to advocate for and include these federal funding requests for Northwest Indiana’s brave members of law enforcement.
While I was visiting IUN, I spoke with students in the TRIO program about the their experiences in college and how they are preparing to succeed after graduation. I’ll continue to tell their stories & advocate for the ability of all students to achieve their goals and obtain a good-paying job in NWI
It was a pleasure to greet students on their way to class recently at the Indiana University Northwest campus in Gary! I wish all the students the best and great success in your studies this year!
On the anniversary of September 11, 2001, we remember the thousands of innocent lives lost and honor the brave first responders who risked their lives to save others. As we go forward, let us recommit to eliminating our differences to bring our region, our state, and our country together.
Political violence has absolutely no place in our discourse. Let us go forward with peace as a nation. My thoughts and prayers are with Charlie Kirk and his family.
Appreciate the opportunity to meet with members of the Indiana Farm Bureau and see the current crop conditions at Herr Farms in Lowell recently. Grateful for your dedicated contributions to the strength of our region’s agricultural economy.
With NIPSCO rates skyrocketing, I will never stop fighting to bring down energy costs and help families pay their bills so that seniors, veterans, and children can stay warm in the winter.
In April, the Administration fired the entire federal staff responsible for disbursing LIHEAP, leaving this vital program in the balance. For 15 years as a local elected official, I helped administer LIHEAP in Northwest Indiana, and I know firsthand the lifesaving support this program provides.
Today in the House Appropriations Committee markup, I reached across the aisle to urge the Trump Administration to restore full staffing for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), a critical federal program that helps working Americans afford utility costs.
Why are the tax benefits for working families temporary, but handouts for billionaires and the privileged are permanent? Communities in Northwest Indiana are struggling with increasing costs and know it’s because the Republican so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill” is unfair toward working families.
I grew up playing in Gibson Woods, & am proud that NWI is home to such incredible environmental wonders for residents & visitors. I applaud the leaders with Lake County Parks and Recreation for this initiative to enhance & improve access to Gibson Woods in Hammond.

Spoke on the House floor yesterday regarding the rising costs of utility bills. The federal government should be building, not blocking projects that lower costs, strengthen our economy, and create American jobs.
Thank you everyone who was able to attend our Community Conversations last week! If you were not able to attend and or have a follow up question, please feel free to contact my office anytime through my website here: mrvan.house.gov/contact
All negotiations pertaining to U.S. Steel must honor the contributions of steelworkers and include them in decision making processes.

We must recognize the essential contributions of all steelworkers, not only to the success of our steel industry, but to our communities, our economy, and our national security.
