Donald Trump has the money to make sure people on SNAP get their benefits, even in a shutdown. He is CHOOSING not to. And don't forget: Republicans passed the LARGEST cut to SNAP in our nation's history.
BREAKING: Democrats just tried to pass a standalone bill to fund WIC & SNAP to make sure families don't go hungry during the Republican shutdown. Republicans BLOCKED it. So Trump won't use emergency funds to keep SNAP running, and Republicans won't let any bills pass. Shameful.
What's Trump been up to during the shutdown? Shoveling $40 billion to bail out Argentina, asking DOJ to pay him $230 million, and demolishing the East Wing to build a $300 million gold-plated ballroom. But he won't lift a finger to stop premiums from more than doubling.
The president should be meeting with congressional leaders on both sides every single day until government is open.   Instead, Trump is in Asia pining to meet dictator Kim Jong Un and he's focused on building himself a $300 million ballroom.
It is painfully clear Republicans are not listening to folks back home.   What families nationwide are saying is: "Please stop my premiums from doubling."   And what are Republican leaders saying? "Not our problem, we never wanted to lower health care costs in the first place."
Trump has single-handedly raised taxes more than any president in my lifetime. He has imposed, without any approval from Congress, billions of dollars in new tariffs—all paid for by the American people.
I happen to believe that your elected officials should vote to reopen government AND keep your premiums from more than doubling.   Government should be open and Americans shouldn't go bankrupt to afford health care.
The President is refusing to spend a cent of emergency funds to keep SNAP benefits from running dry, but he did move heaven and earth to send $40 billion to bail out Argentina.
Rep. Newhouse and his House colleagues have not been in session and voting for WEEKS now—it’s an absurd abdication of their responsibility to the American people. Get back to work. Negotiate, reopen government, and save the ACA tax credits.
Trump is NOT a doctor and no one should be taking medical advice from a man who once told people to inject bleach. Talk to your doctor and listen to the experts—not conspiracy theorist quacks like Trump and RFK Jr.
President Trump—the man who passed the largest cuts to SNAP in history—is CHOOSING to let families go hungry. He is outright refusing to use an emergency fund to pay SNAP benefits, even though USDA said they would just last month! Trump needs to keep SNAP running.
The government has been shut down for 27 days. Families are already seeing their premiums skyrocket for next year. This is a crisis and NEVER in my time in office have I seen a president who won't even TALK to the other side about a solution. This is absurd.
RADDATZ: Should the president be meeting with Democrats to end the shutdown? BESSENT: Well, what good does it do, Martha?
Democrats have been pleading—for weeks!—with Republicans to work with us to fund the government and save people from exploding health care costs.  Democrats want to help people, while this president and Republican leaders want to ignore them.
