Also, to put on my ancient and dusty Oscar-guy hat for a moment (I keep it at hand for special occasions): This will be the first year for the Best Casting Oscar. Marty Supreme is the kind of movie it was invented for. Every choice--and there are many!--feels both right and unexpected.
All the Marty Supreme reviews that are agog over Chalamet are not wrong. I have some questions about how many people will want to spend 150 minutes in the company of this character, but his work and the overall dynamism of the filmmaking are absolutely undeniable. >

Completely true. Laugh-out-loud funny at many moments, and the celebrity players (I had heard of maybe 1/3rd of them, about the same for me as Traitors US) come to it in exactly the right spirit--both lighthearted and crazily committed.
It's okay for some campaign promises to be about optics rather than policy. "We're going to bulldoze his monument to himself on Day One and rebuild the East Wing" would be a very good one for 2028.

There are people who strongly feel that anybody should be able to go into any play with no prior knowledge and get it and enjoy it. Stoppard didn't write for them, and it seems silly to resent him for it, since it's not as if there aren't a trillion other things for people who insist on that to see.
Also, I want to be honest: I'm sure there are people who saw Arcadia, The Coast of Utopia, The Invention of Love, and Travesties and never once thought, uh-oh, I should've read up beforehand. I am not one of them. Sometimes, what I didn't know frustrated me. But there is joy in racing to keep up. >
Stoppard also had a huge (and largely unchronicled) film legacy. Obviously, just the work for which he was credited--Shakespeare in Love, Empire of the Sun, Brazil--is major, but he was also one of the most in-demand rewriters, fixers, and polishers in movies. We still don't know everything he did.
I saw Mike Nichols’s production of Stoppard’s The Real Thing on Broadway when I was 19. It starred Jeremy Irons, Glenn, Close, Christine Baranski, Peter Gallagher, and Cynthia Nixon. Which is insane. No single production did more to shape my understanding of what modern theater could be.
I’m dumbstruck by news of the death of Tom Stoppard—maybe because he hoarded all the words and knew how to use them better than just about anyone. I hope we savor his spectacular wit and erudition and argue about the politics of his plays forever. He was monumental, and also a kind and curious man.
