Today, @durbin.senate.gov and I conducted an oversight visit at a shelter with unaccompanied children in the custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement.

I joined @repbillfoster.bsky.social today for an oversight visit to a shelter housing unaccompanied children. Many of these children have already endured horrors that no child should face and they ought to be treated with dignity and have their case heard before an unbiased court system.
Last week in Naperville, I joined a vigil to honor those who have lost their lives due to ICE's abuses of power.
No federal agency is above the law. Congress must rein in ICE and demand transparency and accountability for those killed by the Trump Administration's mass deportation operations.
Congress too often fails to act. It is time for Congress to pass AI regulation that is technically feasible, internationally coordinated, and protects our children, workers, and national security.
And when we in Congress responded with the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Act, it ended the chaos and ushered in the strongest decade of continuous economic growth in our country's history.
The last time we saw anything like this was the 2008 global financial crisis, when giant Wall Street investment banks asked to be converted to regulated depository institutions, and the Mortgage Bankers Association pleaded for regulation.
Over 1,100 employees from leading AI companies—among them top staff—signed a letter asking the U.S. government to develop ways to “deliberately pace" AI advancement so safety measures can catch up. When business leaders get together and ask to be regulated, Congress should pay attention. 🧵

A real ceasefire agreement should include details on how to verify and monitor Iran's uranium stockpile. So far, this administration hasn't even come close.
My event, America 250: Celebrating Civics, is next week! Join me on Tuesday, July 28, at 7:00 p.m. CT at Waubonsee Community College to discuss how we can work together to strengthen our democracy.

When we negotiated the Iran Nuclear Deal, we were sending our nation's top nuclear experts.
Trump is sending real estate dealers. We should all be on high alert.
I just introduced the Federal Naming Standards Act.
At a time when trust in government is under strain, Congress must ensure that public institutions serve the public—not the interests of any individual officeholder.

Democrats, along with just 4 Republicans, were able to pass another War Powers resolution in the House.
Trump should follow the law, listen to Congress, and end his war in Iran.
Last week, on the anniversary of Rep. John Lewis' passing, I was proud to join members of our community to call out the damage being done by this administration.
It was an honor to serve with John Lewis in Congress. We owe it to his legacy to never stop fighting for American democracy.
I'm voting NO on Republicans' $1.15T NDAA.
Congress shouldn’t waste another taxpayer dollar on Trump’s failed war in Iran. We also shouldn’t deepen our collaboration with Israel’s military—as Sec. 219 would do—without safeguards to prevent violations of international law.
Trump should get Iran's nuclear program back under supervision before helping develop another one in the region.
I expect Congress to assert its authority on this decision when it comes up for a vote.

Trump and his negotiators are failing in Iran.
Now, gas and diesel prices are climbing and there's no end in sight.
Today, gas prices hit $4 a gallon, and diesel is over $5. Trump's war in Iran is making your life more expensive.
I am saddened to hear of the death of two service members in Jordan. My thoughts are with their families and the troops injured and still missing.
This war must come to an end.
