ICYMI: Republicans held a vote late into the night to cut Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, food assistance, school meal programs, and more. Somehow, they're still ADDING to our debt because their billionaire tax breaks are so extreme. It's a rip-off. My full statement:
Republicans still won't reveal the final text for the tax scam that they plan on voting on today. They're hiding from the American people. The GOP needs to answer for their plans to make record cuts to social services, including stopping free lunches for over 400,000 kids in need in North Carolina.
I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Congressman Gerry Connolly. Congressman Connolly was a true champion and advocate for the people of Northern Virginia. My thoughts are with his family, staff, and loved ones during this difficult time.
Rep. McIver was upholding her oath of office by conducting lawful oversight of the Delaney Hall detention center. The charges against her are a blatant attempt to intimidate and interfere with Congress’ ability to check and balance the Executive Branch. We stand with you @replamonica.bsky.social.
Attacks on grant programs and government funding hurt our ability to deliver proper transit infrastructure improvements. I'm proud to cosponsor @hankjohnson.house.gov's Stronger Communities Through Better Transit Act to help people in every community get where they need to go.
The GOP scheduled another late-night vote in the Rules Committee to advance cuts to Medicaid, food assistance programs, and more. @repmcgovern.bsky.social and @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social are right. If the people support this bill, then have your meeting in front of the cameras in the light of day.
#OTD in 1965, President Johnson signed legislation to create Head Start which works tirelessly to uplift kids nationwide. As a former volunteer, I know the transformative impact this program can have, and I will keep fighting to ensure it receives the proper funding it deserves.
Today marks 71 years since SCOTUS struck down racial segregation in schools in the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case. As our public schools become increasingly divided, I will continue fighting to ensure that every child across the nation can have equal access to education.
I spoke on the House Floor about Trump’s cuts to the NSF, NIH, and more—including $20 million in cancelled NSF research grants for North Carolina. These cuts are devastating to my district, and are a step towards losing a generation of innovators and letting China lead STEM innovation.
It was great meeting students participating in Duke University’s Initiative for Science and Society. Our district continues to feel the weight of Trump’s cuts to research funding, and I will keep working tirelessly to support programs like these which build the next generation of STEM leaders.
May is #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth. This month and every month, I remain committed to fighting the stigma surrounding mental health and ensuring that support is always available. Remember, you're never alone. If you or a loved one is struggling then call, text, or chat 988.
I spoke on the House floor to honor the Hayti Heritage Center's 50th anniversary—a milestone that celebrates Hayti’s enduring legacy and vibrant culture. The legacy of Hayti is deeply intertwined with Durham’s history, and I’m grateful for the center’s work to preserve our heritage.
