Why must I, the protagonist of reality, deviate from my base preferences to accommodate the existence of other human beings? Clearly this is the fault of the profit motive
Not even that though. I don’t mean “society as it is now” I mean literally “the concept of having to live around other people”.
“Capitalism forces you to wake up at 7am against your body’s natural rhythms” no that’s Taylorism and if you don’t like living in a society that coordinates effort to ensure a better outcome for all then I don’t think you’ll love the alternatives
Archetypal example is “capitalism ground me down so I quit my job and set up a small business so that I’m my own boss”. You didn’t dislike capitalism! You disliked authority!

I do quite enjoy the fact that the actual impact of IHT is that it’s a tax on not trusting your kids. “I can’t give them inheritance now, what if they misuse it/don’t help me out if I fall into need”
If your university is providing a valuable and desirable course then it will be able to charge a much higher price than the no-education-just-two-years-of-right-to-work visa, and everyone is happy. If your university is just selling a visa with makework attached, the state gets the cash.
My modest proposal: every year the government should auction 10,000 special visas that are identical to student visas but without the requirement to attend classes. The price that auction settles at is the amount every university has to pay the state per foreign student admitted.
