I represent San Diego, the biggest military community in the country. If the shutdown continues, our service members will miss their first paycheck on October 15. I’m in D.C. to negotiate to protect health care and reopen the government, but Republicans are refusing to engage.

That’s why I’m staying hopeful that these latest peace talks will be successful, so we can bring all the hostages home, finally end this horrific war, deliver life-saving humanitarian assistance in Gaza, and work toward lasting safety and security for Israelis and Palestinians.
I know for me and so many others, we haven’t been able to fully mourn because it’s not over: many hostages remain captive, the war rages on, and the scourge of antisemitism is rising.
The world changed two years ago when Hamas attacked, kidnapped, and killed civilians in Israel. My heart breaks for the hostages and their loved ones, many of whom I’ve gotten to know over the past two years.
Rep. Deluzio and I saw this coming – so we introduced the New Insurrection Act to stop a power grab like this and narrow when the president can deploy American troops on American soil.
Republicans have voted over and over again to gut health care for millions of Americans. Now, they’ve shut down the government instead of extending life-saving health care premium tax credits.
They’ll do anything except give you health care.
Trump’s more focused on building his ballroom than reopening the government.

If Republicans in Congress do nothing (which they’re good at), health insurance premiums will increase for over 20 million Americans next year and about 2 million people will lose coverage – especially low-income families and seniors.
Trump has been effectively shutting down our federal government for months.
We need to stand up now and get verifiable, concrete guarantees that protect the funds Congress has already appropriated and protect the rule of law.
Innocent children like Suza died from curable diseases because Trump illegally froze foreign aid, dismantled USAID, and stranded the lifesaving medication they needed.
