About 90 percent of students in this country attend public schools. Students have the right to equal access without discrimination and students with disabilities have the right to a free and appropriate education.
Secretary McMahon has betrayed students, families, and educators by dismantling and demolishing the Department of Education, something she does not have authority to do. Congress created the Department and it would take an Act of Congress to shut it down. 🧵

About 90% of students across the country attend public schools and more than 8 million of them are eligible for services under IDEA. I will fight back against these illegal and unconstitutional actions and will not stop until we save public education from this rogue administration.
And moving OCR will undermine the civil rights of students and essentially put enforcement of critical federal protections in the hands of a Trump-run Department of Justice.
It will compromise the ability of schools to provide every student with a free and appropriate public education, increase bureaucracy for students and families, and delay funding for important programs and services.
Moving these programs will be devastating for students, especially students with disabilities.
In their ongoing effort to shut down the Department of Education, Secretary McMahon just announced that they plan to move IDEA, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, to the Department of Health and Human Services and move OCR, the Office of Civil Rights, to the Department of Justice.
