These officers took an oath to serve our country and dedicated their lives to advancing our nation’s values. President Trump’s reorganization of the State Department is not making us stronger or safer.
The State Department has officially terminated hundreds of Foreign Service Officers who are qualified, trained, and have years of experience.
On Tuesday, May 5, the State Department separated more than 200 Foreign Service members under the reduction in force first announced last July, even as it continues to recruit and onboard new officers. Read our statement: https://afsa.org/afsa-statement-state-department-reductions-force
I led a group of 30 lawmakers demanding transparency from the Trump Administration on Israel’s nuclear weapons program. Congress should do everything in its power to minimize the risk of nuclear disaster.
I am in touch with their father, Victor Labrador, and I plan on visiting with the family during my inspection of Dilley tomorrow. The family were asylum seekers and had valid work permits—what is happening to them is shameful.
ICE arrested a 5th and 2nd grader at the school bus stop in San Antonio as their classmates watched in horror. Their stepmother was detained with them. The community at Alamo Heights Independent School District elementary is speaking out—no child should be locked away at the Dilley trailer prison.
And congratulations to Daniela Vargas from Brandeis, whose work "A New Era" earned second place, and Layla Vigil from Communication Arts High School, whose work " Working Class Hero" earned third place.
It was wonderful to celebrate San Antonio’s student artists during the Congressional Art Competition. Congratulations to our first-place winner Kimberly Campbell from Brandeis High School, whose work “Sibling Beginnings” will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol.
In the middle of a healthcare provider shortage in the Rio Grande Valley, it is unthinkable that ICE would keep Ruby locked away. Her 5 year-old daughter Milena and husband need her home. Her patients need her too. ICE should release Dr. Barrios and allow her to continue her work helping people.
Dr. Rubeliz Bolivar Barrios was completing her residency in South Texas when ICE locked her away. Her colleagues call her Ruby. They say that as an emergency and trauma doctor, she serves every patient with empathy and dedication. Being bilingual, she makes people feel seen and heard.
I am concerned that Republicans will see this as a greenlight for even more unconstitutional redistricting to stay in power. Congress must work to restore the Voting Rights Act and the promise of America—one voice, one vote.
Our democracy depends on fair representation in Congress. The Voting Rights Act gave power to communities, like Black and Latino voters, who were historically disenfranchised. Today, the Supreme Court further eroded this landmark legislation in striking down Section 2 of the law.
Nexoli has a work permit and was trying to do everything the right way. ICE must release her and stop its case to deport Wilfredo immediately. He should be treated like a kid—not a criminal.
Wilfredo is 10 years old. Last week, he represented himself in immigration court. His mother, Nexoli, was detained in Houston and has been locked up and away from her son since December. Now, DHS wants to send him to Ecuador—a place he has never been and knows no one.
ICE has locked away members of our community that have committed no crime without bond. At the South Texas Immigration Processing Center, I met many folks who have called America home for decades and have done nothing wrong while here—and yet they are kept in ICE prisons.
ICE has since detained the family again and is now in the process of deporting them from the US. They are on a plane to Detroit before final departure right now. A federal judge just signed an emergency order to block their deportation. The Trump Admin must follow the law and the court order.
