As Military City, USA, my hometown understands very well the stakes and costs of war. I won’t vote to send another generation of American women and men from San Antonio or anywhere to fight in another 20 year, trillion dollar war in the Middle East.
The President broke his promise when he dragged the nation into war with Iran. He even threatened genocide against Iran, calling for "the death of a civilization."
I am deeply saddened by his passing. He was a man who believed in the power of education and community and worked every day to realize those ideals. His legacy lives on through countless students and San Antonians. María and their family are in my thoughts and prayers.
I was especially proud when my brother Julián renamed the college readiness program, Café College, in honor of Dr. Berriozábal to recognize his extraordinary career transforming lives through education.
He and his wife María have been longtime friends of mine. I am grateful for his guidance and mentorship during my upbringing and beyond.
Outside of the classroom, he fought for equity and opportunities for underserved communities, making our city a better place to learn and live.
He worked tirelessly to encourage and prepare generations of Latino students to pursue studying math and science. He founded the Pre-Freshman Engineering Program (PREP), helping give over 50,000 alumni access to rewarding academic and career opportunities in STEM.
Today with great sadness, we remember the life of Dr. Manuel P. Berriozábal and the mark he made on San Antonio.
A professor of mathematics, and a faculty member of UTSA since 1976, his passion for education touched the lives of countless San Antonians.
I’m glad to hear that he will be released and am grateful to all of the doctors and folks who spoke out.
Dr. Ezequiel Véliz will be home soon! He was living in the states for nine years with his U.S. citizen husband and practicing medicine in an underserved South Texas community when ICE targeted him. He should have never been locked away.
It was great to meet with the Organization of American States (OAS) Secretary General Albert Ramdin to discuss how the United States and the Latin American & Caribbean region can work to promote fair elections. I look forward to our continued work strengthening the region and our partnership.

He should be at home with wife, Stephanie, and their children. Thank you for speaking up for Juan and those like him who have been unfairly targeted by the Trump Administration.
He’s dealing with kidney stones and has lost lots of weight because of gastrointestinal issues.
Just visited Juan Velasco. He’s an honest, hardworking Dreamer who works in healthcare. Today he’s sitting in a prison in Laredo, TX missing his family that includes a two month old baby girl. youtube.com/shorts/q7pDf...
He is a DACA recipient who did everything the right way. Today, I met with Stephanie and her husband Juan to check on them and work toward his release. The Trump Administration must stop targeting Dreamers who make our country great.
Stephanie Villarreal is a U.S. citizen and mother of 3—her youngest is 9 weeks old. Her husband was on the way to visit their newborn daughter in the NICU when ICE arrested him. He has been locked away in Laredo, Texas, at a for-profit detention center—unable to hold his baby and raise his children.
