Saying we should get rid of FEMA and force people to fend for themselves is an appalling take from President Trump. The federal government is here to help the people of America - not leave them in the lurch when disaster strikes.
Trump: "FEMA is gonna be a whole big discussion very shortly, because I'd rather see the states takes care of their own problems."
Firefighters are battling apocalyptic blazes around the clock for pennies on the dollar of what they should be paid. They deserve more. Shame on Republicans for voting against what has long been a bipartisan priority.
House Republicans just voted AGAINST @housedemocrats.bsky.social's bill to permanently give federal wildland firefighters a long-overdue pay raise. Our brave first responders deserve better.
My bipartisan bill with Rep. Jay Obernolte builds on investments from the Biden-Harris admin so we can prepare our communities for worst-case scenarios and address the build-up of issues that make wildfires more destructive than ever.
The climate crisis is fueling catastrophic wildfires that are ripping through communities, decimating entire regions, and destroying lives. The government should treat these natural disasters the same way as any other: by providing resources and empowering communities to build resiliency.
Migrant crossings plummeted this past year, but Trump is declaring a crisis at the border to weaponize the military against legal immigrants and even US citizens. We have record oil production, but Trump’s declaring an energy emergency to roll back clean energy investments and climate progress.
Increasing dirty energy exports worsens the climate crisis and raises costs for families – the experts at the Department of Energy said so themselves. Senator Jeff Merkley and I led our colleagues in calling on the admin to use facts and science when making decisions about new exports.
Conditioning aid to the folks who are reeling from California’s devastating wildfires is one of the most cruel and ignorant things you could do. Speaker Johnson is way off base, and Democrats will not support his partisan conditions – full stop.
Here are some resources for those directly impacted and information on what the Biden administration is doing to get support out quickly. Lives are on the line—it’s time for solutions, not stunts. CA: ready.ca.gov LA County: lacounty.gov/emergency For more on federal action: wh.gov/resources
Right now, our priority is immediate aid and safety for those affected. Once relief is secured, it’s time to demand real action. The GOP majority can no longer ignore the climate crisis or the solutions that will actually make meaningful change.
The GOP's shameless exploitation of this tragedy will not stand. It's time for real solutions like the comprehensive climate action and disaster preparedness Democrats have been fighting for. Anything less is a betrayal of the communities hit hardest.
Families are mourning, and many are returning to ruins with nowhere to turn. Our first responders are putting everything on the line to protect communities from further devastation. And yet, instead of stepping up, some are using this tragedy to push their political agenda. 🧵
Jefferson was a freethinker who fully believed religion should stay out of the government. Speaker Johnson is once again lying to further his endless campaign to infuse our secular democracy with Christian Nationalism.
The people of Puerto Rico have suffered too long under a failing power grid. Yesterday’s island-wide blackout is yet another insult to injury caused by an unsafe & unacceptable energy system. @naturalresources.bsky.social will continue to demand oversight & accountability.
It’s completely unacceptable and not how governing works. The GOP needs to get serious and work with Democrats to pass truly bipartisan solutions next Congress. We are here to serve our constituents and do right by them, not bend the knee to un-elected, incompetent, corrupt billionaires.
Thanks to Democrats, we have avoided a shutdown. But let’s be clear here. Republicans should not have betrayed our agreement and threatened a shutdown (throwing the country into chaos and uncertainty) because Elon Musk told them to.
