From American Airlines: "American Eagle Flight 5342 en route from Wichita, Kansas (ICT) to Washington, D.C. (DCA) was involved in an accident at DCA... If you believe you may have loved ones on board Flight 5342, call American Airlines toll-free at 800-679-8215."
I am following the response to a reported aviation incident at DCA, and am in touch with airport officials as we try to learn more about what happened and why. This is obviously very worrying, but I urge the community to please let first responders do their jobs and save lives.
Virginia civil servants are being summarily fired in a purge of the federal workforce. Organizations and businesses are preparing for layoffs, and funding for medical research is frozen. Virginians deserve honesty from their Governor.
Youngkin's own administration acknowledged internally that “aid portals” were “temporarily suspended” by the freeze. Hospital payments were frozen. This happened because of a terribly written order so incompetently executed that he had to call the White House for clarity himself.
VA Dems: “Youngkin told Virginians...the news of Medicaid portals being shut down was ‘misinformation’…Blatant lying & gross negligence to thousands of Virginians who rely on these benefits” ("Youngkin will always choose Trump over Virginians. Always.") bluevirginia.us/2025/01/va-d...
Trump’s shutdown of medical research, disaster relief, and more is illegal and unconstitutional, and will harm millions of Americans. I am reviewing legal and legislative responses, and others are also pursuing legal challenges. I will fight this order every way I can, and I won't be alone.
Russ Vought devised these illegal holds on funding for disaster relief, medical research, student aid, child care, nutrition, and foreign assistance, as well as purges of the federal workforce. If confirmed as OMB Director he’ll keep this up for four years. The Senate should reject his nomination.
Donald Trump's brazen attempt to purge Inspectors General violates the law, attacks our democracy, and undermines the safety of the American people. My fellow Ranking Members and I are demanding he reverse course and comply with the law.
I urge IG's to defend their independence in every way possible including through legal remedies. And I urge any members of the Republican majority in either chamber who still have a spine to stand up to this corrupt president and fight Trump’s assault on the rule of law.
Trump's purge of inspectors general is flagrantly illegal and crooked. That Trump chose to break the law to remove independent, nonpartisan watchdogs who guard against waste, fraud, and criminal behavior shows his intent to commit acts of extreme corruption.
I think Trump’s "Schedule F" order is clearly illegal, but in this judicial environment preventing it from taking effect may require robust legal challenges and ultimately passage of the Saving the Civil Service Act, which I strongly support.
Merit, not political allegiance, has been the core value for government hiring and advancement for over a century, through Democratic and Republican administrations. Our merit-based system has strong support with both parties in Congress today.
We did not always have a merit-based system that saw federal employees hired and promoted based on performance and skill. Congress passed laws specifically to replace a spoils system that was rife with incompetence and corruption– which is what would ensue if Trump gets his way.
America's federal workers perform safety inspections on our food and water. They are the first line of defense against epidemic and common illnesses alike. They provide care for our veterans. They deliver our mail. Replacing that with political cronyism would hurt everyone.
