I would have preferred to quietly conduct my oversight responsibilities as I always have, but ICE chose not to follow the law. These ‘guidelines’ are illegal, and that deserves public scrutiny.
On Tuesday morning, my staff notified ICE of my intention to conduct oversight at the Montana Ave facility the next day. This is the process we have gone through innumerable times since I was elected, through both the Trump and Biden admins, including less than a month ago.
Congresswoman Escobar plans to visit the El Paso SPC at 8915 Montana Ave tomorrow afternoon around 2:45 pm MT.

I will be the only staff member accompanying her.

She’s visited the facility before, but it’s been at least a few years since she was there.

I know she will have questions about current statistics for all the El Paso ICE facilities, as well as the status on the additional facility expected to come into service later this month.

Please let me know if you need any further information.

Best,
This week, ICE illegally denied me entry into a processing facility in my district, and today, they released a statement saying I “[gave] the appearance of a political stunt intended to generate publicity rather than pursue genuine oversight.” I have some thoughts.🧵
🚨 Today, after giving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) 24 hours’ notice, more than is required by law, I was turned away from the ICE facility on Montana Ave. where I planned to conduct my constitutionally authorized oversight duties. 🧵
Signs of the climate crisis are all around us, and our country’s attempts to face this existential crisis have fallen woefully short. We cannot – and should not – normalize these catastrophes.
It’s also with the community of Ruidoso that only a year after devastating fires is now facing more tragedy. We’ve seen the havoc wrecked by nature and the deadly consequences of climate change across the country, most recently in Kerr County and again in Ruidoso.
Two of the victims of last night’s catastrophic flash flooding in Ruidoso were the children of a service member stationed at Fort Bliss. My heart is with them, their loved ones and the entire Fort Bliss family as they go through this incredibly difficult time.
By funding USAID for 18 cents per taxpayer per day, our country has singlehandedly saved 90 million lives around the world over the last two decades. But now that Trump has shut USAID down? 14 million people could die from preventable deaths by 2030. www.npr.org/sections/goa...
