🧵 Hours after Republicans passed the Big Ugly Bill, Trump held a rally. He spent much of his speech touting his signature legislation—including this gem: “Just as I promised, we’re making the Trump tax cuts permanent and delivering no tax on tips, overtime, or Social Security.” (1/5)
Here’s what they don’t want to mention. Their bill: - Cuts about $1.3 trillion from health care and food assistance for Americans and gives about $1.3 trillion in tax breaks to the rich, the largest wealth transfer in American history
“This bill secures the border” FACT: This bill will supercharge mass deportations, funneling $80 billion of your tax dollars to enrich the private prison corporations and their shareholders (like Stephen Miller)
“Republicans are making lazy 30-year- old men get out of the basement and go work” FACT: 92% of adults under age 65 on Medicaid are already working or unable to work due to caregiving responsibilities, illness or disability, or school attendance.
“Republicans are giving the middle class a big tax cut, including no taxes on tips.” FACT: This is a TEMPORARY, limited tax break, on tax-reported tips, capped at $25k. This “benefit” expires in two years, but the tax breaks for billionaires are PERMANENT. You get crumbs, they get gold bars.
“Democrats voted against tax cuts.” FACT: Wrong! We tried to collaborate with Republicans to make this bill something that would help - not hurt - Americans by filing hundreds of amendments to preserve your healthcare and tax the rich. Republicans rejected every amendment.
As we come to the close of debate on the bill that creates the biggest transfer of wealth in American history - from the poor to the very rich - the American people are about to get a barrage of disinformation and half-truths from Republicans. Let’s fact check these claims 🧵
“Father God, we know our billionaire donors need another yacht. Help us deliver for them, Oh, Lord, and teach the poor and the middle class how to lift themselves up from poverty in their time of need.”
The only deadline is Donald Trump’s demand for the 4th of July. The tax cuts don’t expire until next year. Republicans know that as Americans learn about cuts to their healthcare, the greater their opposition. This is about their self preservation, not the American people.
