As we head into Memorial Day weekend, remember that Speaker Johnson pulled an Iran war powers resolution from the House Floor yesterday because he knew it would pass. He refuses to do anything to stop unnecessarily sending our troops into harm’s way.
Every year, the National Association of Letter Carriers collects non-perishable food left at post offices and in mailboxes and delivers them to food banks and shelters. In San Diego, they partnered with the amazing local nonprofit Heaven’s Windows. So glad to join this effort!
Cathedral High School student Nikki is a hero. Last year, her empathy and courage helped save a stranger from taking their own life on the side of a road. I’m so proud of her and honored to recognize her as a CA-51 Outstanding Youth.
It was great to see so many families and neighbors out and exploring our local small businesses at the 8th annual Kensington Walkabout!
I just introduced a resolution to honor the lives of Amin Abdullah, Mansour “Abul Izz” Kahzia, and Nader Awad, who were murdered at the Islamic Center of San Diego this week. The best way to honor their memory is to finally address the horrific rise of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hate.
I was so impressed by Helena and Harper’s amazing documentary “This is What Democracy Looks Like,” which won first place in C-SPAN’s annual student documentary competition!! We are so proud to officially recognize them both as Outstanding Youth from CA-51!
Grossmont College Library is currently hosting the “Americans and the Holocaust” traveling exhibit, which examines Americans’ responses to Nazism and war in the 1930s and 40s. Everyone should see it to learn from the past so we can make “never again” a reality.
I just led a moment of silence on the House Floor to honor Amin Abdullah, Abul Izz Kazhia, and Nader Awad, who were murdered at the Islamic Center of San Diego. In their memory, we need to come together and respond to hatred with love, compassion, understanding, and community.
To the Muslim community in San Diego and across the country: know that you’re not alone. We have your back and we’ll get through this together.
I'm thankful for the swift and courageous actions of law enforcement and first responders who responded to the shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego today. They ran toward the gunfire and toward the danger and ultimately saved lives.
My office and I are aware of the active shooter situation at the Islamic Center of San Diego. We don't have any details about a potential motive yet, but I'm devastated for those students, worshippers, and the Clairemont community. Everyone should be able to pray, worship, and learn in peace.
I met with Students Without Limits, which supports immigrant students in San Diego – especially those facing deportation fears for themselves or their families. Trump’s cruel immigration policies are terrifying our youth and making all of us less safe.
Republicans made devastating cuts to SNAP (aka CalFresh) in their Big Ugly Bill – meaning many of our neighbors will go hungry. I met with Alondra, the President and CEO of the San Diego Hunger Coalition, to discuss the impact of these cuts and what we can do.
No matter what state you’re in, the Supreme Court’s gutting of the Voting Rights Act is attack on us all — and we need YOU to pull up and fight back.
I was so happy to visit Juarez Elementary school and meet these wonderful students and teachers! Juarez Elementary students participate in a 90/10 dual language learning program to become bilingual/bi-literate learners – so cool!
I’ve been in Alabama today with @RepTerriASewell and over a dozen of my colleagues to fight for voting rights and fair political representation. The Supreme Court’s gutting of the Voting Rights Act is an attack on all of us and we all need to fight back.

I visited the Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) center at SDSU and met with some of the students involved. I’m glad to see great initiatives like this that support AAPI students and provide inclusive programming and curriculum on campus.
Keeping drugs off the streets and holding drug traffickers accountable is important to keep our community safe and save lives. I met with some of the scientists and agents at the DEA Southwest Lab to learn more about the work they do (and they gave me a cool lab coat too!).
The conditions in ICE detention are so bad that people seeking asylum who literally fled for their lives would rather go back to their home countries than continue to fight their case here. Due process is becoming a myth.
The huge cuts to SNAP and new mountains of red tape Republicans enacted in the Big Ugly Bill are now being felt – by children, people with disabilities, and seniors who are going hungry.
When everything is so unaffordable, cutting food assistance is just cruel.
