Monkeys and apes belong in the wild — not in living rooms. I'm thankful for organizations like Born Free USA, who rescue previously held primates as pets — but they can't do it alone.
We must pass the #CaptivePrimateSafetyAct to ban private possession of these animals and increase public safety.
I'm also grateful for the U.S. Capitol Police, and how they defended our democracy on January 6th, 2021 and every day since. Unfortunately, Mike Johnson is preventing this plaque honoring the officers from being displayed. Mr. Speaker, please respect our officers! (2/2)
It's National Police Week, and I'm so thankful for all the work our officers at Chicago PD do for our city! (1/2)
My bill, the #CaptivePrimateSafetyAct, will prohibit primates like Willis from being household pets. This ban will increase public safety, as police and paramedics often have to intervene in dangerous and sometimes fatal interactions with these animals. (2/2)
Meet Willis. An African vervet monkey, Willis was illegally kept as a pet in Chicago for the first three years of his life. He is now living in a large, safe enclosure at the Born Free Primate Sanctuary in Texas. (1/2)
The EPA just announced it's rescinding limits on PFAS in our drinking water. Hey Trump and Zeldin, Making America Healthy Again does not mean exposing Americans to #foreverchemicals that cause cancer, heart disease, and birth abnormalities.
I'm proud of my Democratic colleagues on the Energy and Commerce Committee for pushing back against Republicans' attempt to strip 10.3 million Americans of Medicaid in an overnight hearing — currently lasting over 22 hours. Hold the line.
I want to take a moment to mourn the passing of Supreme Court Justice David Souter.
A Republican who often agreed with the more liberal wing of the Court, Justice Souter embodied judicial excellence by choosing patriotism over party in his decisions.
Happy Jewish American Heritage Month! This May, we come together to celebrate the Jewish American community's traditions and contributions to our history.
I was proud to vote for new gun safety laws in 2022 but there’s so much more Congress can do to prevent incidents like this. As a member of the Congressional Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, I know the job isn’t done until no student is ever put in harm’s way again.
No young person should ever be subjected to gun violence or worry about being harmed at their place of learning.
The entire Mather High School community is in my thoughts and I hope the injured student has a speedy recovery. abc7chicago.com/post/chicago...
Between the obvious ethical violations and security risks of accepting a luxury jet as a gift from a foreign nation, it's clear that Trump continues to use his presidency to enrich himself.
This is not someone who is concerned with the average American or doing what's right.
Great going to Opening Day for the Logan Square farmers’ market this weekend—voted Chicago’s best farmers’ market six times!
I am appalled that the Trump Admin is ending TPS for Afghan refugees. Protecting Afghan allies who risked their and their families' lives to help U.S. service members in Afghanistan has been a bipartisan effort. The admin will be sending them back to chaotic, dangerous conditions.
I am thankful that Edan Alexander, the last remaining Israel-American hostage held by Hamas, was released this morning. Now is the time to secure a ceasefire so that all of the remaining hostages — living and deceased — can be reunited with their families.
Happy Mother’s Day to the best mom I know. I’m so thankful to have Barb as my partner in life and in parenthood.
Barb, thank you.
Welcome, Pope Leo XIV. The Catholic Church’s first American (and Chicagoan) pope.
I hope he continues Pope Francis’ legacy of acceptance, and I wish His Holiness the best in his papacy — even though he’s a White Sox fan.
During Mental Health Awareness Month, we recommit ourselves to ending the stigma against people with mental health challenges.
If you're struggling, call 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or message them at 988lifeline.org.
You're not alone💚
Yesterday, I joined my colleagues in sending a letter to President Trump and AG Bondi urging them to withdraw Ed Martin's nomination for U.S. Attorney for DC. Today, Trump pulled his nom. I hope the president's next pick has the experience for the job.

Happy Victory in Europe (VE) Day! Today, we celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Allies’ victory over Nazi Germany.
